Coco Gauff , who is ranked No. 7 in the world, won the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Sunday after defeating No. 17 Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4.
The American, world No. 7, raced in the lead throughout the game, after taking out the N.1 Iga Swiatek the day before.
Muchova qualified by eliminating runner-up Aryna Sabalenka.
In sweltering heat, both players attacked the match on a high note, taking turns breaking in the first three games, first to Gauff and then to Muchova.
The exchanges of advantage continued, until Gauff led 5-3, service in hand. In 44 minutes, she put the first set in her squad.
The scenario was more or less repeated in the second round. The American saved a break ball in the fourth game before taking her opponent’s serve in the next for 3-2.
Then, helped by luck and a ball falling on the right side after hitting the net, Cori Gauff found herself at 4-2, not without having to fight to save her serve.
Muchova then multiplied the mistakes, being broken again. But then it was Guff’s turn to outwit, missing three match balls.
At 5-3 and with the American two points away from winning the tournament on Muchova’s serve, the match was briefly interrupted due to the discomfort of a spectator sitting just behind the referee’s chair.
The Czech seized her chance to go back to 4-5 but, lost lost, as Gauff finished in the next game, becoming at 19 the youngest winner of the tournament
