SURPRISING CHAMPION

WIMBLEDON. London By Emiliano Naftali
Marketa Vondrousova defeated Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 to be crowned the Grand Slam champion at Wimbledon. The Czech player, having a flawless performance with only thirteen errors, managed to win her first Major title after falling in the 2019 Roland Garros final. At 24 years old, she becomes the Wimbledon champion.

Jabeur started strong, winning 15 of the first 20 points and taking a 4-2 lead after over 30 minutes of play. However, she began to make mistakes, almost without being forced by her opponent, and her frustration on the court was a result of this. Vondrousova, without doing much, was turning the match around. She unexpectedly took the first set 6-4.

In the second set, the match started similarly to the first, with the Tunisian player winning three consecutive games to go up 3-1 with the serve. She was getting back into the match, but her opponent held her ground during crucial moments and took advantage of Jabeur’s stage fright, once again taking the lead. Vondrousova hit a final volley that secured her the title and fell to the ground in pure joy before going up to her box, where her family awaited, in tears.

Jabeur also shed tears, saying, “It’s the worst defeat of my life,” completely devastated and disheartened. “It’s going to be a very tough day for me, but I will come back stronger. Someday we will achieve it, I promise.”

“Tennis is crazy, winning this after what I’ve been through…” said Vondrousova in her victory speech. Last year, she missed the tournament due to a hand injury.
