THE FIRST WEEK IS OVER: Let’s analyze the field for the second week

By Gabriel Matteazzi in New York

he first week went by with a lot of surprises in the first rounds, which is not different from everything we saw this year until now, and these surprises and upsets in the first rounds will probably continue throughout the tournament.

There’s a new generation coming, and the new players’ tennis is very different from the previous generation. They all have a much more efficient and solid foundation in their technical and physical development. It’s more than just one part, it’s a whole new concept of how to build points, because they can count on tools that are much more powerful and reliable, both in the stroking technical aspects an in the movement aspects

Everything that was special in the previous generations comes standard in the new generation, and most of the weaknesses were eliminated, so the efficiency of the new players is taking over the establishment and making everything very unpredictable.

Every week, we see one more player with standards that make us think that they can make it to the top ten, and the main problem is that there are way too many new players in this situation. Since you can’t have more than ten guys in the top ten, the battle to be there will make us see constant change at the top, with surprises and new contenders all the time.
We will see a lot of challenge and a lot of players going down with new unknown guys, a lot more in the Grand Slams, because it’s a big draw and gets more players from the challengers who have a game that can put the top seeds in trouble in the first rounds, and who come to a Grand Slam with nothing to lose, and with the confidence that many other players that they know and played have been successful in similar circumstances.

It’s going to be a very interesting second week of the tournament.
