SHAME IN ROME!

WTA ROME.Italy. By Emiliano Naftali
Sensational events unfolded during the women’s singles award ceremony at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, involving champion Elena Rybakina and her opponent Anhelina Kalinina. The ceremony took an unexpected turn when the announcer, who was on the court, made a humiliating mistake. When presented with a picture representing the WTA’s gratitude to the Italian Open, the announcer mistakenly called Elena Rybakina by the name of her opponent, Anhelina Kalinina. This caused visible embarrassment for Rybakina, who appeared bewildered.

To add to the embarrassment, the announcer made another awkward blunder by calling Anhelina Kalinina by the name of Elena Rybakina. At this point, both tennis players were visibly uncomfortable during the speeches on the court. The situation became even more chaotic when the announcer and the staff swapped the prizes during the presentation, leading to an error.

Throughout the ceremony, the announcer repeatedly emphasized his regret over Anhelina Kalinina’s injury, while downplaying Rybakina’s victories. As the crowd witnessed this grotesque spectacle, they expressed their disapproval with boos. The second presenter attempted to salvage the situation by urging the crowd to cheer, saying, “Do it for the girls.” However, the crowd continued to boo, reflecting the disappointment in the embarrassing and superficial organization of the award ceremony.

Overall, this unfortunate incident marred the reputation of a tournament of this caliber, exposing the careless and superficial manner in which the award ceremony was conducted.
