ROUND OF 16 AT THE AGE OF 33

US OPEN By Gabriel Matteazzi
Caroline Wozniacki’s return to the Grand Slams took on epic proportions yesterday after her comeback victory against Jennifer Brady (4-6, 6-3, and 6-1), which propels the Danish player into the US Open’s round of 16. It happened three years, seven months, one week, and a day after her last major match in 2020, against Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open, where she had been crowned champion in 2018.

The 33-year-old Danish tennis star, who is also a mother to a son and a daughter with former NBA player David Lee, retired after that defeat and decided to return to the courts in early August in Montreal. She started with a victory against Birrel but suffered losses to Vondrousova in the Canadian tournament and Gracheva in Cincinnati. However, in New York, she pulled off a surprise win against Petra Kvitova before eliminating Brady.

This Sunday, she will face off against Coco Gauff, another local player who mounted a comeback on Friday to defeat Belgian Elise Mertens 3-6, 6-3, and 6-0.
