AMERICAN ´S DREAMS

ATP 250 DELRAY BEACH OPEN
Top seed Taylor Fritz demonstrated resilience in the beginning of his title defense at the Delray Beach Open on Wednesday evening, narrowly defeating the in-form Portuguese player Nuno Borges with a score of 7-6(5), 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Facing pressure from the former Mississippi State standout, Borges, who served for the first set and even had set point at 40/30, Fritz managed to save it with a well-executed drop shot. He then navigated through a tight tie-break and capitalized on the momentum to clinch the victory. Despite the challenging conditions with the Delray Beach wind, Fritz relied heavily on his serve throughout the match, winning an impressive 87 percent of his first-serve points and delivering 14 aces, as reported by Infosys ATP Stats.

In contrast to his usual aggressive style of play, Fritz adapted to the conditions and remained composed in crucial moments, ultimately securing the win. Additionally, the weather in Delray Beach featured gusty winds and a cool breeze, adding another layer of challenge to the players’ performance.

Meanwhile, Marcos Giron continued his impressive form at the Delray Beach Open by defeating Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in a hard-fought match. The 30-year-old American triumphed over the world No. 19 with a score of 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1, advancing to the quarter-finals. Despite Mannarino’s efforts, he couldn’t match Giron’s resilience, especially in the decisive final set.

Giron’s victory marks his fifth win in the last seven matches against Top 20 players, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level. He is now set to face American wildcard Patrick Kypson in the upcoming round, promising another exciting match at the Delray Beach Open.

“The crowd was amazing. It’s one of my favourite things coming back to Delray every year. The crowd really shows up here, they love the tennis and I feel like I get a lot of support here, so it’s great.”
