Argentine tennis player Francisco Cerúndolo (No. 26) advanced to the round of 16 at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after defeating Frenchman Hugo Gaston (No. 93) in straight sets.
Additionally, Camilo Ugo Carabelli (No. 91), the recent champion of a Challenger tournament in Rosario, secured one of the biggest wins of his career by overcoming Spanish seed Pedro MartÃnez (No. 37).
Tomorrow’s schedule will feature an all-Argentine clash between Sebastián Báez (No. 31) and Mariano Navone (No. 46), while Francisco Comesaña (No. 87) from Mar del Plata will face experienced Chilean player (No. 47).
The Argentina Open finalist secured an early break in the third game but still struggled to control the set. He conceded three breaks but managed to force a tiebreak after reclaiming two of them. In the tiebreak, he had to save five set points before capitalizing on his second opportunity to take a hard-fought first set.
In the second set, Cerúndolo looked revitalized. He left behind the mistakes that had made the first set so close and secured three breaks while remaining unbreakable on his serve, closing out the match on his first opportunity.
Another significant victory came from Camilo Ugo Carabelli, who battled past Spain’s Pedro MartÃnez 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
