US OPEN – Men’s Singles
Serbian star Novak Djokovic booked his place in the third round of the US Open on Wednesday, overcoming a slow start to defeat American Zachary Svajda 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in a display of patience and resilience.
The four-time champion was tested by the World No. 145 in the PIF ATP Rankings, who entered the match brimming with confidence after coming through qualifying and riding the momentum of several matches in New York. For much of the opening stages, Djokovic looked flat, struggling with the sweltering heat, while Svajda impressed with smart shot selection and composed decision-making. The 20-year-old American pushed the former World No. 1 to question what seemed like the inevitable outcome.
Only after the third set did Djokovic fully impose his experience and presence, gradually wearing down his spirited opponent and ultimately advancing to the next round.
