SINNER: FROM SCARE TO JOY

US OPEN. men´s singles. By Gabriel Matteazzi
Jannik Sinner, current World No. 1, endured a much tougher battle than expected against Denis Shapovalov (No. 29), but eventually secured his spot in the US Open fourth round with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The Italian is keeping alive his dream of reaching the final at all four Grand Slams in 2025, having already lifted the Australian Open and Wimbledon trophies earlier this season. This latest run marks his fourth straight Slam final if last year’s US Open final is included. With that, he remains in pursuit of Novak Djokovic’s record streak of six consecutive Grand Slam finals achieved between 2015 and 2016.

So far this season, Sinner has collected 34 wins against just four losses — three to Carlos Alcaraz and one to Alexander Bublik. He has now strung together 10 consecutive victories in New York, with his last defeat at the tournament dating back to the 2023 Round of 16 against Alexander Zverev (No. 3).

“He was serving really well and putting on a lot of pressure,” Sinner explained in his post-match press conference, when asked why Shapovalov had managed to trouble him more than most. “And, after all, I’m not a machine. Sometimes it’s difficult for me too.”

“Today I felt like, on my side, there were no issues. I was playing great tennis, and so was he. That’s what the match was about. As I always say, when I start a match, I just want to feel well-prepared. If I have that feeling, it gives me confidence in my weapons. But at the same time, a match is always different from a practice.”
