SIMPLY THE BEST

WTA BRISBANE. By Leo Canaparo
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka opened the 2026 season by once again confirming her status as the dominant force in women’s tennis. Returning to the WTA 500 Brisbane International, where she had lifted the trophy in 2025, the Belarusian successfully defended her title in her first tournament of the year, completing a flawless week without dropping a single set.

In Sunday’s final, Sabalenka delivered another commanding performance, defeating Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk (No. 26) 6-4, 6-3. The result capped an imposing run that underlined both her consistency and authority on hard courts, particularly in Australia.

Sabalenka’s path to the title was emphatic from start to finish. She cruised past Cristina Bucsa 6-0, 6-1, then dismissed Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-3, Madison Keys 6-3, 6-3, and Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4, before closing the week with another composed victory over Kostyuk. Not only did she avoid losing a set, but she was rarely under serious pressure at any stage of the tournament, reinforcing how comfortable she feels on Australian soil.

The triumph extended her winning streak in Brisbane to 10 consecutive matches and added another milestone to an already impressive résumé. With this latest title, Sabalenka reached 22 WTA singles trophies at just 27 years of age.

Her dominance in Australia has been a defining theme of her recent history. Over the past few seasons, Sabalenka has established herself as the benchmark on hard courts, combining relentless power with improved mental resilience—qualities that have propelled her to the top of the rankings and made her a constant presence in the latter stages of the sport’s biggest events.

By starting 2026 in such convincing fashion, Sabalenka not only defended her crown in Brisbane but also sent a clear message to the rest of the tour: the world No. 1 has begun the new season exactly where she left off—setting the standard.
