BUBLIK Prevails After a Tough Battle

Australian Open . Men’s Singles. By Leo Canaparo
Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Bublik defeated Argentina’s Tomás Etcheverry 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a hard-fought match that lasted 2 hours and 35 minutes.

In a tight, point-by-point contest, both players battled intensely, but it was Bublik — recently having broken into the Top 10 of the ATP rankings — who ultimately showed his class and justified his current status. The Kazakh player displayed composure in the key moments to secure a straight-sets victory.

Last year, at this same tournament, Bublik had suffered a first-round defeat in straight sets against another Argentine, Francisco Cerúndolo. Since then, his game has taken a significant step forward. In 2025, he captured four titles — Halle in Germany, Gstaad in Switzerland, Kitzbühel in Austria, and Hangzhou in China — and in 2026 he has already added another trophy to his collection in Hong Kong.

This run marks Bublik’s best performance at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round for the first time. His most notable Grand Slam result to date, however, came at Roland Garros 2025, where he advanced to the quarterfinals, confirming his presence among the elite.

For Etcheverry, currently ranked No. 62 in the world, it was a solid tournament as he reached the third round, matching his result from 2024. Despite his effort and competitiveness, it was not enough to go further. His focus now shifts to the South American clay-court swing.

Next, Bublik will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur.
