SABALENKA FACED A TOUGH DEBUT

WTA 1000 Miami. By Emiliano Naftali
Aryna Sabalenka secured a solid win over American Ann Li in a tightly contested two-set match, 7-6, 6-4.

It was debut time for Sabalenka at this Miami Open, as she looked to begin her “Sunshine Double” campaign on a high note after being crowned champion at Indian Wells Open just days ago. The Belarusian, who defeated Elena Rybakina in a very tight final in California, returned to Miami as the defending champion.

Her opponent in the second round was local player Ann Li, who was aiming for the biggest win of her career while playing close to home, following a positive opening victory in three sets against Australia’s Kimberly Birrell.

Sabalenka showed visible frustration with her game for much of the match, but still relied on her experience in key moments to secure the win. Fellow American Caty McNally will be her next opponent in the third round.
