Taylor Fritz captured the biggest title of his 2026 season after defeating Spain’s Rafael Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in one hour and 49 minutes to lift the Mubadala Citi DC Open trophy in Washington.
With the victory, the World No. 8 became just the third American man to win the tournament this century, joining James Blake (2002) and Sebastian Korda (2024). The title also marked the 11th ATP Tour trophy of Fritz’s career and ended a frustrating run of runner-up finishes this season.
Fritz entered the final as the player with the most championship-match appearances in 2026 without lifting a trophy. He had fallen short in Dallas (to Ben Shelton), Stuttgart (to Shelton) and Halle (to Frances Tiafoe), but finally broke through in Washington.
The American now matches compatriot Tommy Paul’s record of four ATP finals this season (1-3), trailing only World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who owns a perfect 6-0 record in ATP Tour finals in 2026. The trio leads the ATP Tour in championship-match appearances through August.
Although Fritz cruised through his opening rounds with straight-set victories over Zizou Bergs and Kamil Majchrzak, his path became considerably tougher in the latter stages. He survived a dramatic quarterfinal against Alex Michelsen, saving a match point before prevailing in three sets, and was again pushed the distance by Brandon Nakashima in the semifinals.
Washington finally ended a frustrating streak for Fritz, who had lost each of his previous five finals at ATP events above the ATP 250 level. Those defeats came at the 2024 US Open (to Jannik Sinner), the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals (to Sinner), Tokyo 2025 (to Carlos Alcaraz), Dallas 2026 (to Ben Shelton), and Halle 2026 (to Frances Tiafoe). On Monday, however, he finally turned the page by defeating the rising 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar.
The Washington Open, one of the oldest and most prestigious hard-court tournaments in the United States, has long served as a key stop in the build-up to the US Open. Over the years, the event has crowned some of the sport’s greatest champions, including Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Juan Martín del Potro, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Nick Kyrgios, and Dan Evans. Fritz now adds his name to that distinguished list while reinforcing his status as one of the leading American contenders heading into the North American hard-court swing.
Despite the defeat, Rafael Jodar continued an outstanding breakthrough season. The 19-year-old Spaniard reached his first ATP 500 final, earning valuable ranking points and further establishing himself as one of the brightest young talents on the ATP Tour.
