COBOLLI Crowned in Acapulco, Claims First Mexican Open Title

ATP 500 ACAPULCO.Mexico
Italy’s Flavio Cobolli defeated American Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 6-4 on Saturday night to capture the title at the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis, one of the ATP Tour’s prestigious 500-level tournaments.

On a night when nearly everything worked to perfection, Cobolli withstood the aggressive challenge of an incisive Tiafoe. The Italian edged a high-quality opening set in a tie-break before confirming his superiority in the second to secure the third ATP title of his career.

The first set was tightly contested, with both players performing at a high level and keeping unforced errors to a minimum. Cobolli earned a set point in the tenth game, but Tiafoe held firm, forcing a tie-break in which both men were sharp on serve early on.

At 4-4 in the breaker, Cobolli produced the shot of the night — a stunning running forehand struck down the line that clipped the baseline. It proved decisive. From there, the Italian served with authority to close out the set.

The second set opened with more intense exchanges, as both players applied pressure on serve to reach 2-2. At that juncture, Cobolli cracked the American’s delivery, breaking serve and then consolidating for a 4-2 lead that moved him within touching distance of the championship.

Tiafoe — affectionately known as “Big Foe” — showed resilience in the seventh game, saving two break points to stay within striking distance. He even surged back with a break in the eighth, reigniting the contest. However, he was unable to consolidate, and that missed opportunity ultimately sealed his fate.

Long regarded as one of the most promising talents on tour, Cobolli not only became the first Italian champion in Acapulco, but also climbed to a career-high No. 15 in the ATP rankings following his triumph. Tiafoe, meanwhile, rose to No. 22 in the world.

In a classy post-match gesture, Cobolli praised Tiafoe and predicted he would return to more finals this season. He then addressed the Mexican crowd in Spanish, thanking them for their passion and celebrating the unique atmosphere of a tournament that, in his words, “is played off the court as well,” fueled by the warmth and energy of the fans.
