FIRST TITLE FOR ARGENTINE NAVONE

ATP 250 BUCHAREST, Romania
Mariano Navone claimed his first ATP title in Bucharest. After losing two consecutive ATP finals in 2024, the Argentine defeated Daniel Mérida 6–2, 4–6, 7–5 to capture the first trophy of his professional career.

The match had started exactly as expected in the opening set, with Navone facing no real trouble from his opponent. Two breaks of serve put him firmly in control early on. However, the young Spaniard responded in the second set, striking a high number of winners, putting pressure on the Argentine, and forcing the match into a deciding third set.

“I have no words”: Navone’s emotional reaction after opening his ATP title account in Bucharest.

Christopher O’Connell (128), Elmer Moller (134), Alex Molcan (189), Botic van de Zandschulp (62), and the aforementioned Mérida were all defeated by “La Nave” on his way to lifting his maiden ATP trophy.

This dream week in Romania brings a major reward for Navone, the 25-year-old born in 9 de Julio: he will climb 19 spots in the rankings to reach World No. 41, not far from his career-high of No. 29.
