SINNER Powers Into Beijing Quarterfinals After Grueling Battle

ATP 500 BEIJING.
World No. 2 Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 in Beijing after defeating Frenchman Terence Atmane 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 in a match that was decided in the final stretch after more than two hours of intense competition.

The Frenchman had his chances in the opening set, particularly in the tenth game, when he squandered four break points before Sinner closed it out with authority. In the second set, Atmane—ranked No. 68—momentarily lost control in a tense game that saw several of his shots crash into advertising boards and even reach the open retractable roof. Yet, he managed to regroup and stunned the 2023 Beijing champion to level the match at one set apiece.

But Sinner’s response in the decider was emphatic. The Italian turned into a relentless force, stringing together three consecutive breaks and sealing a commanding 6-0 set that thrilled a packed center court, buzzing with a weekend-like atmosphere eager to witness the top seed in action.

Sinner finished with 23 winners and only 12 unforced errors, while Atmane, despite firing 11 aces, couldn’t keep up with the pace. Overall, Sinner converted six of eleven break points, compared to Atmane’s three of nine.

With this victory, Sinner moves into the quarterfinals where he’ll face Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (No. 57), who earlier defeated Alexandre Muller (No. 38) 6-3, 7-6(5).

This win extends Sinner’s remarkable run in Beijing, where he captured the title in 2023—one of the key milestones of his breakthrough season. The Italian has developed a special connection with the Chinese capital, where his aggressive baseline game and composure under pressure have repeatedly shone. Now, as the reigning champion, he looks determined to defend his crown and strengthen his bid for the year-end No. 1 ranking.
