Jordan Thompson, the eighth seed, shocked German Alexander Zverev, the top seed, by defeating him 7-5, 4-6, and 7-6 (2) to book a spot in the Los Cabos Open final against Norwegian Casper Ruud, who earlier eliminated Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
In the semifinals of the tournament, held at the Mexican resort, the Australian secured a hard-fought victory that lasted three hours and 42 minutes, extending to a tiebreak in the final set. Thompson clinched the first set 7-5 in a closely contested battle, breaking Zverev’s serve in the fourth, sixth, and twelfth games. Zverev only managed to win 44 percent of his points on his first serve.
In the second set, the German regained his form to win 6-4 against the Australian, who fell victim to four unforced errors and never came close to breaking his opponent’s serve.
In the final set, Thompson let slip five match points in the twelfth game, leading to a tiebreak. However, the Australian rallied in the tiebreak, breaking Zverev’s serve four times to win 7-6 (2). His opponent on the final day will be Casper Ruud, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-6 (4) in a match that lasted one hour and 51 minutes.
