WIMBLEDON BEGINS MONDAY. WILL SINNER BOUNCE BACK AFTER HIS FRENCH OPEN DISAPPOINTMENT?

WIMBLEDON – London
By Leo Canaparo
The 2026 edition of Wimbledon gets underway this Monday, June 29, as the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament opens its main draw.

Opening day promises an exciting schedule featuring several marquee matchups. Among the highlights are Novak Djokovic taking on Yibing Wu, defending champion Jannik Sinner making his return to competition against Miomir Kecmanovic, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka facing Teodora Kostovic, and Daniil Medvedev meeting former finalist Marin Cilic. The first day will also feature appearances by Coco Gauff, Félix Auger-Aliassime, and Naomi Osaka.

Following his surprising second-round exit at Roland Garros, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner begins the defense of his Wimbledon crown on Monday against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic (No. 51). The Italian will be eager to put his disappointing French Open campaign behind him and reaffirm his status as the favorite to capture the Gentlemen’s Singles title once again.

While Sinner seeks redemption after Paris, Wimbledon has long been the stage where tennis legends have cemented their legacies. Since its inaugural edition in 1877, the Championships have become synonymous with tradition, excellence, and the unique challenge of grass-court tennis. The iconic All England Club, the players’ all-white dress code, and the electric atmosphere on Centre Court have made Wimbledon one of the most revered sporting events in the world.

Throughout its rich history, Wimbledon has witnessed some of the sport’s greatest champions. Roger Federer holds the men’s record with eight singles titles, while Martina Navratilova won an unprecedented nine women’s singles crowns. Björn Borg’s dominance in the late 1970s, Pete Sampras’ seven titles, Serena Williams’ remarkable achievements, and Novak Djokovic’s modern-era success have all contributed to Wimbledon’s enduring reputation as the ultimate test of skill, composure, and tradition.
