KEY TIPS for Playing Tennis in California’s Dry Heat

By Leo Canaparo Tennis coach
Playing tennis in a desert climate like California’s INDIAN WELLS is one of the toughest competitive environments a player can face — and I say that from years of experience working with athletes in extreme conditions. The dry air and high temperatures accelerate dehydration far more than most players realize. Hydration doesn’t start when you step on court; it begins the day before. Electrolytes are essential, not optional, and consistent fluid intake at every changeover is a discipline that separates prepared athletes from reactive ones. Energy management is equally critical. Under relentless sun exposure, you must learn to pace yourself, construct points intelligently, and avoid unnecessary physical expenditure early in the match.

Technically, desert conditions change the game. The ball travels faster through dry air and tends to bounce higher, even on hard courts like those at the Indian Wells Open. That means you must adjust your margins. Use heavier topspin to control depth, give yourself more net clearance, and be prepared to take the ball earlier to avoid getting pushed behind the baseline. Wind is another major factor — often swirling and unpredictable. In those moments, discipline wins. Aim for bigger targets, stay balanced with strong lower-body positioning, and accept that perfection is unrealistic. Smart adaptation is what counts.

Mentally, desert tennis demands resilience. Heat magnifies frustration and fatigue clouds decision-making. That’s why routines between points, controlled breathing, and emotional regulation are non-negotiable tools. I always tell my players: in extreme conditions, the match becomes as much about composure as technique. Recovery also plays a decisive role — immediate rehydration, proper stretching, cooling strategies, and quality rest are part of your competitive responsibility. In the desert, victory rarely goes to the flashiest player. It goes to the one who prepares thoroughly, adapts intelligently, and competes with maturity under pressure.
