ATP 250 STUTTGART. Germany
Ben Shelton achieved a major milestone on Sunday at the Stuttgart Open, dethroning defending champion Taylor Fritz with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory to capture his third title of the 2026 season and the first grass-court trophy of his career.
The World No. 5’s path to the title was anything but straightforward. Shelton was pushed to a deciding set in every match he played throughout the week, showing remarkable resilience under pressure. He saved one match point against Marcos Giron in the second round and fought off two more against Jiri Lehecka in the semifinals before booking his place in the championship match.
Against Fritz, one of the most accomplished grass-court players on tour, Shelton delivered another composed performance, using his powerful serve and aggressive baseline game to secure the biggest grass-court victory of his career.
“It means a lot to me,” Shelton said during the on-court interview. “It was a tough week and it wasn’t easy to keep advancing. I’m pretty tired, but when I look at the quality of the opponents I faced, the difficult matches I managed to win, and today’s victory against one of the best grass-court players in the world, it gives me a huge boost of confidence. I’m happy to win my first title in Stuttgart.”
The triumph marks another significant step forward for the American, who continues to establish himself as one of the leading contenders on the ATP Tour heading into the grass-court season’s biggest events.
