The quarterfinal match at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome between Rafael Jodar and Luciano Darderi was suspended on Wednesday night because of smoke.
The Spaniard was leading 6-5 against the Italian when smoke from the Coppa Italia football final, played at the Stadio Olimpico just 500 meters away, drifted onto Campo Centrale, forcing play to stop due to poor visibility and preventing the electronic line-calling system from functioning properly.
After an interruption of less than 20 minutes, the match resumed and Darderi held serve to force a tie-break, which he eventually won amid the excitement of the home crowd.
